Counselling is a process through
which individuals are helped to improve their understanding
of themselves and their relationship with others, as well as to have great
depth in understanding the conditions within which they live. Counselling is
the core of guidance and can be rendered to an individual (individual
counselling) or to a group (group counselling) counselling is also a
personalized service involving at least two person – the counsellor and the
counselle in a warm permissive relationship doing which the client is helped to
develop and improve ability to solve personal adjustment problems and to
achieve positive growth.
Counselling
is also a process of self discovery that can help people learn how to deal more
effectively with situation in their lives such as depression, addiction and
substance abuse, stress, problems with self esteem, grieve, issues related to
mental and environmental health and rational relational problems. The process
help people feel more comfortable with themselves, others and help develop some
of the skills needed to deal with the tension that come from inside.
Counselling process help people get “unstuck”. Through the development of
insight and increase self awareness, people are able to gain a better
understanding of their own behaviour. Conditions issues, feelings, and event
that motivate them. The most useful benefit of counsellor is often an improvement
in health and well being. This often
translate into increase self confidence, productivity and a greater sense of
vitality and peace of mind. People of any age can grow and profit from the
experience of counsellor.
Counselling
is a relationship between a concern person and a person with a need this
relationship is usually person to person although sometimes it may involve more
than two people. It is design to help people to understand and clarify their
views and learn how to reach their self determine goals through meaningful well
informed choices, and through the resolution of emotional or interpersonal
problems it can be seen from this definitions that counselling can have
different meanings.
ENUMERATE THE NEEDS FOR PARENTAL COUNSELLING FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS FAMILY
Parents
of special needs children have the same hope and dream as all parents. So when
parents learn that their children has a disability or a chronic illness they
began a journey that lead them to a life that is often filled with strong
emotion, difficult choices, interactions with many different professionals and
specialist and an ongoing needs for information and services. Parents initially
do not know where to start from, how to seek for assistance, information,
understanding and support.
Having
and living with a child with disabilities can have a profound effect on the
entire family that is the parents, siblings, friends, and the entire family.
Disability promote a derogatory terms which affects the entire family most especially
the parents of such child. The impact often depends on types of disability,
severity, position of the child, family social economic status and position,
their educational status and lives they live. These accompany by series of
emotional reaction from both parents therefore, there is need for professionals
to help such parents. The followings are some of the reason why some of the
reasons why parents of children with disability need help.
1. Ignorance:
as common disability is, yet most people know little or nothing about it. They
do not know the causes of disability, prevention and management. So parents
needs orientation on positive factors of disability and ways to prevent the occurrence.
2. Public
attitudes: The public general attitude to all forms of disability in the past
was barbaric. This attitude had improve but in Nigeria due to some factors such
as religion, tradition among other things. People are still bias towards
children with disabilities
3. Sense
of guilt: Parents of children with disability often develop sense of guilt and
blame themselves for the cause of their wards problem. This feeling leads to
depression and other health problems among these parents thereby they need the
helps of professional so as to prevent further complications.
4. Service
provider: Parents of children with disability often needs help because often
the needs of a child with disability at times is cumbersome. these includes health
issues, academics problems, social problems, mobility etc. parents therefore
parents needs information on how and where to get the professionals and
facilities needed for their child. Parents are therefore bombard with who can
be of help and what strategy can be used to train such children. Parents also
need to learn how to adjust to their new life with a child with disabilities.
This is because parents of children with disabilities are likely to experience
social economic hardship assign stressor in finding services and help for the Childs’
condition.
5. Managements:
Managing emotional behaviour experience lot of emotional problem often because
of the attitude of the public towards them, this include depression, anger,
anxiety, social problem, parents are more concern on the effects of such on
their children and how they can be of help to them. Therefore parents need help
on the tips of management of these children.
